Tone deaf test

Here is the thing every online tone deaf quiz gets wrong: "tone deaf" mixes up two different abilities. One is perception – can your ear tell two pitches apart? The other is production – can your voice reproduce the note you heard? True tone deafness (congenital amusia) is a perception condition, and it is rare – a few people in a hundred. Nearly everyone who worries they are tone deaf hears pitch just fine; the gap is in the voice, and that gap is trainable.

So this test checks both, separately. Part one is a pure listening test – no microphone, ten pairs of notes. Part two plays you five notes to sing back, and measures how far you land from each one, in cents, using the same pitch detection as the Cadence practice app. Your result tells you which half is which – kindly, in numbers.

What your result means

Ear fine, voice fine. Not tone deaf, full stop. Whatever made you wonder – a comment at school, a rough karaoke night – it was not this.

Ear fine, voice off. By far the most common result, and the opposite of tone deafness: you can hear the notes; your voice has not yet learnt to land them reliably. That is breath, placement and habit – production skills that respond directly to practice with feedback.

Ear struggled, voice fine. Singing in tune requires hearing in tune, so the ear slips were almost certainly conditions or attention, not perception. Retake part one with headphones.

Both struggled. Before reading anything into it: retry warmed up, with headphones, in a quiet room. Casual web tests misfire far more often than genuine amusia occurs. If pitch differences truly never register for you, the section below explains what amusia actually is – and even then, a web page is a screen, not a diagnosis.

What tone deafness actually is (and is not)

Congenital amusia is a lifelong difficulty perceiving pitch differences, present from birth and unrelated to intelligence, hearing sensitivity or musical exposure. Research estimates it affects only a small minority – on the order of a few percent. It shows up as an inability to notice when a melody contains a wrong note, or to tell that two pitches a semitone apart differ at all.

What it is not: singing flat under pressure, going sharp when nervous, losing pitch on long notes, drifting off key by the end of a song, or struggling to find a starting note. Those are all production problems – common, normal, and improvable. If you can tell when someone else sings out of tune, your perception is working; the machinery you would need for amusia to explain your singing simply is not broken.

A remarkable number of adults carry a verdict handed down decades ago – a teacher who told them to mime, a family joke that stuck. The evidence says almost all of them hear pitch normally and simply never trained the production side. An untrained voice landing 80 cents off a note is not a defect; it is a starting point. The fix is not talent. It is seeing where each note lands, adjusting, and repeating – which is precisely the loop this test gives you a first taste of.

Common questions

Is tone deafness real?

Yes, but rare. True tone deafness – congenital amusia – affects only a few people in a hundred. The overwhelming majority who "can't sing" hear pitch perfectly well; the gap is in producing the note, which is trainable.

Why does this test make me sing?

Because listening quizzes only test half the story. Playing notes for you to sing back – measured in cents – tells you whether any struggle is in your ear or your voice. It is almost always the voice, and that is the trainable half.

I sang in a different octave – does that count?

Yes, fully. Reproducing a note in the octave that suits your voice is correct singing; the test scores distance from the nearest octave of the target.

I failed the listening part – am I tone deaf?

Not on this evidence alone. Web tests misfire with speakers, noise and tiredness, and research finds most people who fail casual checks are not amusic. Retry with headphones; if small differences genuinely never register, a formal assessment is the proper next step.

Can tone deaf people learn to sing?

Genuine amusia makes pitch-matching very hard. But if your ear test is fine – as it is for nearly everyone – you are not tone deaf, and accuracy responds directly to practice with feedback.
